18th YSCPSJ Finished Successfully (With Gratitude)

Last July 6, many people attended and many fruitful presentations are given at the 18th Young Scholars Conference on Philippine Studies in Japan, at Kobe College, Nishinomiya City.  As one of the preparation committee I would like to express my gratitude, especially to those who participated in it, for the warm support and commitment.

「東南アジア研究におけるフィリピン」
“The Philippines within the Context of Southeast Asian Studies”

『フィリピンの事典』(同朋舎、1992年)、『戦争の記憶を歩く 東南アジアのいま(岩波書店、2007年;英語版:A Walk Through War Memories in Southeast Asia, New Day Publishers,  2010)、『マンダラ国家から国民国家へ-東南アジア史のなかの第一次世界大戦』(人文書院、2012年)などの編集・執筆を通じて考えた東南アジア研究のなかでのフィリピン研究の特色と役割について論じる。
Prof. Shinzo Hayase graduated from the Department of Oriental History, the University of Tokyo in 1980, and subsequently finished his Ph.D. at Murdoch University (Australia) in 1984.  Among the books he has edited/authored include (in Japanese): Firipin Kingendaishi no Nakano Nippon-jin: Shokuminchi Shakai no Keisei to Imin, Shohin (The Japanese in Philippine Modern History: Immigrants and Imported Goods in a Colonial Society), University of Tokyo Press, 2012; Mandara Kokka kara Kokumin Kokka e: Tonan-Ajia-shi no Nakano Dai-ichiji-Sekaitaisen (Mandala States to Nation States: World War I in Southeast Asian History), Jinbunshoin, 2012; Mikan no Firipin Kakumei to Shokuminchika (Unfinished Philippine Revolution and Colonization), Yamakawa Shuppansha, 2009, and Mirai to Taiwasuru Rekishi (History Talks with Future), Hosei University Press, 2008. 

His publications in English include: A Walk Through War Memories in Southeast Asia, New Day Publishers, 2010; Mindanao Ethnohistory Beyond Nations: Maguindanao, Sangir, and Bogobo Societies in East Maritime Southeast Asia, Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2007, and Rekishi Kukan toshiteno Kaiiki wo Aruku (A Walk Through Maritime World As a Historical Space), Hosei University Press, 2008.

Prof. Hayashi will reflect on these works and discuss the characteristics and role of Philippine Studies within the context of Southeast Asian Studies.
